Let's face it...becoming aware of how stress is activated and deactivated in our lives allows us to be better prepared on how to handle it. You see when our stress switch is flipped, initially the left side of our brain (which handles the logical aspect of our lives) gets overtaken by the right side (which deals with the emotional areas). When this occurs, we tend to lose our ability to learn and make the best decision when faced with unfamiliar, uncomfortable or challenging events. One of my past clients is a great example of this idea in action. For years, a large accounting firm in the area had been using the same software application for handling all their clients' accounts. Each of the accountants were familiar and efficient with using the software. The company's business was booming. That all changed once they were faced with upgrading all the computers in the office. You see... they not only upgraded the machines but also moved to a new client software. This meant a steep learning curve for the accountants. Within a few weeks, staff was starting to complain about the software. They said it slowed them down and they didn't like it. It was at this very point in time, that their stress switch was flipped. The following weeks didn't show any signs of improvement with the accountants, they were having a tough time learning the new software and coping with the change. Realizing that the company was not going to change back to the previous software, a number of the accountants started to change their attitude towards it and instead they focused on the aspects of the software that they really liked. In changing their attitude towards the system, and focusing on what was good about it, many reported that they were starting to find it easier to learn the application and were feeling less stressed in the process. Others even started providing feedback at the weekly staff meeting on tips and shortcuts they had learned to make it even easier. A subtle change in perspective, improved how they felt and how effective they were with the new software.
Here is what I want you to do. The breakthrough in handling stress can come as quickly as the amount of time it takes us to think differently. Remember, "Chill & Choose." Calm down and Choose a better perspective on the situation. Maybe it's a more positive perspective, maybe it's a lesson learned that will help you to grow. There's always a better perspective and it is the absolute key in managing your stress switch and helping you feel better.
